It was a different excursion for 50-odd students of Seva Sadan and Valluvar Gurukulam schools in West Tambaram as they spent time at a police station on Wednesday learning about law, crime and prevention.

The Tambaram police briefed the students on how police officers work and showed them the different units on the station premises such as crime, traffic, law and order, intelligence wings, passport verification section and the lock-up.

The students were given a demo of weapons and equipment used by the police force. Some students were curious about how the control room functioned and how the wireless sets worked.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Tambaram, T. Eswaran answered the queries of the students. He stressed the importance of abiding by the laws and that students should help the police department in prevention of crimes at grassroots level.

“It was a learning experience for both the policemen and the children,” Mr. Eswaran said, adding that if other schools were interested in similar visits, they were welcome to contact the local police station and it would be arranged.
