In a daring attack, a gang entered the orthopaedics ward at Government Royapettah Hospital and attacked known rowdy ‘Bokkai’ Ravi, who later succumbed to his injuries at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

According to the police, the attack took place around 8.15 p.m., when a seven-member gang with knives and sickles barged into the orthopaedics ward of the hospital.

Ravikumar had come to the hospital, along with two of his aides — Santhakumar (17) and Vicky alias Tamilchelvan — to be treated for a broken leg. Ravi had recently been released on bail after being booked under the Goondas Act.

Other patients in the ward fled in fear on seeing the gang. Ravi suffered severe injuries, including cut injuries to his neck and shoulder, while Santhakumar, who managed to flee, suffered a few cuts.

The gang fled the hospital premises in an autorickshaw. Ravi who was profusely bleeding and remained unconscious was rushed to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. Santhakumar too was taken there.

According to doctors, Ravi died at 10.45 p.m., while Santhakumar is recovering.

In a similar incident in March 2013, reformed gangster 40-year-old R. Prakash was hacked to death by a rival gang in front of his teenaged son on the third floor of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

The police have registered a case and a special team has been formed for the investigation.
