Restaurants in Mamallapuram told to remove thatched structures

Restaurants in Mamallapuram have been directed to remove thatched roofs atop their buildings by government officials. This follows a fire accident at a fishermen’s settlement at Mamallapuram on Thursday night. A cracker burst by some children accidentally set ablaze a thatched roof atop a restaurant and the fire spread to roofs in adjacent buildings. However, no one was injured.

On Saturday, a team of officials visited the area and convened a meeting with local leaders of the fishermen community and restaurant owners.

Officials urged owners of 40 restaurants having thatched roofs and the public who have put up such structures atop their buildings to remove them immediately.
