Residents to get crime-fighting tips

Police to interact with Chromepet residents following spate of chain snatching incidents

February 06, 2014 08:42 am | Updated May 18, 2016 06:20 am IST - CHENNAI:

In an attempt to create awareness about simple crime prevention methods, the Tambaram police are planning to interact with residents of Chromepet on Saturday.

The proposed meeting comes in the wake of a spate of chain-snatching incidents in and around Tambaram. H. Gangairaj, assistant commissioner, will speak to residents of New Colony, Chromepet, on taking precautionary measures to safeguard themselves from crime.

On February 2, in New Colony, a woman was relieved of her chain weighing about 2 sovereigns. The victim suffered an injury after she was pushed down by the assailant. At least three other incidents of chain snatching have been reported in and around Tambaram in the past few days, and women have lost jewellery totally about 16 sovereigns.

Kalaiarasi (26) of Padmavathy Nagar in Madambakkam was relieved of her six-sovereign chain by three motorcycle-borne men on Tuesday. Umadevi (33), who was walking along Rajagopalan Street in West Tambaram, had her five-sovereign chain stolen by two men on a motorcycle on Monday evening. Pushpa (54) lost her five-sovereign chain in Selaiyur to assailants. Police suspect one gang is behind all these incidents.

Residents have also appealed to the police to step up vigil of the interior streets of localities, as most victims are women travelling alone on unpopulated stretches. V. Santhanam, president, Chromepet New Colony Residents’ Welfare Society, said women were becoming soft targets and the meeting was aimed at creating awareness among residents on protecting themselves from similar attacks.
