Report sought on toilets

The Madras High Court on Friday directed the Public Works Department (PWD) to carry out inspection of various courts in the State and file a comprehensive report as to the status and availability of public toilets on court premises.

The First Bench of Chief Justice S. K. Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan passed the direction on a PIL moved by advocate Vengai I. Prakash Raj highlighting the unavailability/ill-maintained toilets on court premises across the State. The petitioner wanted the court to issue direction to the Registrar General of the High Court and the Secretary, Law Department to take steps to maintain toilets on the court premises.

Recording the submissions, the Bench said, “The Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority to ensure that the Principal District Judges concerned shall report as to the adequacy or inadequacy of these facilities in the different courts… The Bench then posted the plea to July 28 for further hearing.
