‘Vishwaroopam 2 is not a political movie’

Actor and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan on Monday said he did not anticipate opposition to his film Vishwaroopam 2, expected to hit the screens later this year. “Last time around (the first Vishwaroopam film), the opposition came wearing a different mask. After the release, it was proved that the opposition didn’t come from them [whomever it was attributed to initially],” he said during an interaction with journalists. “That was political. I am ready to face all opposition as a politician. I have made arrangements,” he added.

To a query whether Vishwaroopam 2 would be a launch pad for his political ambitions, he said it won’t.

“No. If I make a new film now, it will be [political]. This film is a continuation. It will not only be a sequel but also serve as a prequel. It will explain who Wisam Ahmad Kashmiri is,” he said.

The film’s release would be as big as that of a Hollywood production, he claimed. “The film will release in thousands of prints throughout the world. It will be comparable to a Hollywood film release. Tamil films should be viewed throughout the world,” he said. The film will release in three languages – Tamil, Telugu and Hindi — on August 10. The Hindi, Telugu and Tamil trailers of the film were unveiled by Bollywood star Aamir Khan, Telugu film star Junior NTR and actor Shruthi Haasan respectively.

Mr. Haasan, however, acknowledged that Indian 2 would be a political film. “The film Indian (first part) itself was a highly political film. It was an angry political film. It was about somebody who was unhappy with the existing [state of] politics,” he said.
