RIGHT TO WALK

Readers' clicks – July 14

The Hindu's Right to Walk campaign is an attempt to reclaim our city’s footpaths for pedestrians. Through a targeted print and online campaign it hopes to empower residents and goad local officials to act. Here, we showcase photos and stories shared by our readers. I believe that as long as Corporation is entrusted with the task and
responsibility of keeping the streets clean and providing pavement,
the chances of residents' RIGHT TO WALK would be a remote possibility.
I reckon the government should consider outsourcing maintenance of
roads to private companies by way of tender.
As residents pay taxes, the money could be channeled as payments to
private companies.
Doing it this way could also reduce corruption and hold private firms
accountable for their services.
However, something OUGHT to be done in the short term and Chennai
Corporation cannot afford to remain a slumbering giant.
