Friday’s showers did not spare motorists and residents in the southern suburbs either.

Motorists faced problems negotiating waterlogged arterial roads, including GST Road and Velachery Main Road. Water stagnation near Selaiyur left many motorists searching for mechanics to repair their vehicles. As rainwater gushed inside houses on Friday, normal life was frozen for residents near Selaiyur Lake.

For the past few years, the 100-odd families living on Erikkarai Street close to Velachery Main Road have been bearing the brunt of heavy rains.

According to the residents, after each spell, the low-lying neighbourhood gets flooded. There is no outlet or stormwater drain for the water to run off.

On Friday, stagnant rainwater mixed with filth entered many houses on Pammal Main Road, rendering residents helpless. Stormwater drains are not cleared of debris before the monsoon, said. S. Suresh, a resident of Muthamizh Nagar in Pammal.
