The Chennai division of the Southern Railway has started sourcing water from the Kolavai Eri in Kancheepuram district near Chengalpet railway station.

A senior Railways official, confirming the drawing of water from the sprawling lake that is spread over more than 100 acres, said that at present, water is being transported to Chennai Central station using three wagons.

The tapping of the lake became necessary due to the shortfall in supply by Metrowater.
