Following repeated representations by Radha Nagar Residents Welfare Association, the Perumbakkam Panchayat has constructed a compound wall around a three-acre land at Radha Nagar.

Now, the Association, with the support of the Panchayat, is taking measures to have a playground-cum-park at the Panchayat property.

“Earlier, the public property was in a sorry state. It was misused as a storage space for construction materials. Tipplers found the place convenient to consume alcohol; various deviant acts were taking place here,” says Kanimozhi, secretary of Radha Nagar Residents Welfare Association.

The upcoming facility, which is located on Radha Nagar Fourth Main Road, will benefit residents of neighbouring colonies, which include Krishna Nagar, Sowmya Nagar, Gokul Nagar, Rukmani Nagar, Veerabhadra Nagar, Babu Nagar and Gayathri Nagar.

In the first phase, we are focussing on creation of basic amenities, which include a walkway, benches and planting of native trees. In the second phase, the Association plans to have dedicated sections for playing basketball, football and badminton and a library

“The Radha Nagar layout was developed in 2004. Now, there are over 1,000 families living here and residents don’t have a space for leisure.

Also, we felt there should be a facility that would cater to all age groups. So we thought of converting the Panchayat land into a playground-cum-park,” adds K. Abhirami, joint-secretary.
