Undying rage: Members of Muslim organisations staging a demonstration to mark the 25th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid, at Valluvar Kottam on Wednesday.

Muslim organisations along with leaders of other political parties staged demonstrations across the State on Wednesday calling for the rebuilding of Babri Masjid which was demolished 25 years ago on this day.

Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) president and MLA M.H. Jawahirullah led the demonstration in Valluvarkottam reiterating to rebuild Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan, leaders of CPI, CPI (M) and May 17 Movement took part to show their solidarity.

Mr. Jawahirullah and others urged that the masjid should be rebuilt where it was standing earlier 25 years ago. He also sought punishment for political leaders who were responsible for the demolition before deciding the title suit on the disputed land by the Supreme Court.

Pointing to the recommendation of Justice Liberhan Commission, which probed the sequence of events that led to the demolition, Mr. Jawahirullah said, “First of all, 68 persons who were indicted by the commission for demolition should be tried before the court of law and punished duly.”

He said immediately after the demolition, then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao had assured the country that the masjid would be rebuilt in the same place but the promise was yet to be fulfilled. Even as the matter is pending before the apex court to decide the title of property, leaders of Sangh Parivar have fixed the date for building a Ram Mandir in the disputed site. Hence, the court should initiate contempt proceedings against them.

Mr. Jawahirullah wanted the court to decide the title suit based on the documentary evidence not on the religious beliefs.

The cadres of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) and Popular Front of India staged similar demonstrations at the State Guest House, Chepauk. SDPI state leader Dehlan Baqavi said, “The demolition of the masjid had brought bad name to the country across world. There is no justice rendered to our Muslim brethern so far even as the incident occurred 25 years ago.” Around 500 persons participated in the demonstration.

Likewise, another demonstration was held near the Central Railway station by Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi led by MLA M. Thamin Ansari along his supporters. CPI leader Tha. Pandian and former MP J.M Haroon of Congress party participated in it.
