The Ambattur Municipality will seek public opinion to arrive at the charges to be paid by residents who seek water connections. Public opinion will also be sought on the Kuthambakkam Compost Yard issue.
This was announced by Municipal Commissioner Ashish Kumar at the council meeting on Thursday.
He said that public contribution is essential to complete the water supply project as the local body is facing a financial crunch. Steps are being taken to recover property tax and other levies due to the municipality.
About 30 per cent of the water supply work has been completed. The total cost of the project is Rs.267.08 crore, of which 35 per cent is by way of a subsidy from the Union government. Fifteen per cent would be raised through loans and the remaining from public, municipality and financial institutions.
Municipal officials said that the municipality had called for objections and suggestions from residents in connection with the implementation of the water supply scheme. The last date for reaching them is August 5.
Mr. Kumar said that Census 2011 could not be completed before the deadline as the number of people to be covered was more than 4.50 lakh.
The municipality had set up information centres to help those who have not been covered in the enumeration process. Such persons may contact the Municipal Commissioner on 94450 00756; Municipality Manager (94444 13747) and enumeration assistants Radhakrishnan (99413 48358) and Raja (98948 24831).
About 140 resolutions were adopted at the council meeting.
