The Tambaram Sanatorium Grade Separator proves highly risky for motorists as the streetlights on the facility are not functioining; streetlight posts are not found on the eastern and western sides of the service lanes.
Not just motorists, pedestrians are unhappy too.
“One section of the Separator has functional streetlights, but these don’t serve the purpose adequately. Though facing the service lanes, they are not positioned well enough to provide sufficient illumination for pedestrians and motorists taking these lanes,” they complain.
R. Aravindhan, a vehicle user, says, “Travelling on the separator has become a nightmarish experience for motorists. The problem of poor illumination is compounded by the fact that many motorists drive at breakneck speed.”
Vehicle users take the separator to reach East Tambaram, Chromepet, Hasthinapuram and Chitlapakkam rather than take a detour through the East and West Tambaram Grade Separator and Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road.
However, according to residents, due to poor illumination, after sunset, vehicle users are forced to take GST Road from Velachery Main Road and to go to Chitlapakkam and Hasthinapuram.
On the service lane on the western side, there is an added problem.
An Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) retail outlet of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) located on Sanatorium Railway Station Road, near Tambaram Sanatorium Railway Station, is proving to be a nuisance to the public.
Tipplers relieve themselves in one corner of the road, causing embarrassment to the public, says a resident.
During rush hour, a number of pedestrians, mostly employees of Madras Export Processing Zone, take the Sanatorium Railway Station Road and Railway Border Road, Tambaram Sanatorium, to go to Chitlapakkam and East Tambaram, where many take a train.
According to official sources, work on repairing the non-functioning street lights will be taken up, and steps taken to erect streetlight posts on the service lanes. Power connection will be given once the poles are erected.
