Precautionary health measures recommended

November 10, 2011 09:39 am | Updated 09:39 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Chennai Corporation Health Department officials have recommended precautionary measures to prevent diseases that commonly spread during the rainy season.

According to a press release, drinking water should be heated properly for a rolling boil as a measure for prevention of diseases such as typhoid, cholera, jaundice and diarrhoea.

Rolling boil happens when bubbles rise from the bottom of the vessel and break free at the top.

Water sold in plastic sachets should not be consumed. People should wash hands with soap before having food. They should also ensure that water was not accumulated in discarded utensils or tyres as it facilitates breeding of mosquitoes.

Food should be consumed soon after cooking. Unhygienic food products sold on streets should not be consumed. Feet should be washed after walking in stagnant water to prevent leptospirosis.

All residents should use toilets or public conveniences and throw garbage only in bins. In case of diarrhoea, oral rehydration solutions should be consumed at regular intervals before taking the patient to the nearest Corporation Health Post or the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet.

For registering complaints call 1913, 25912686 or 25912687.
