The department of posts has asked the police department to provide security to two post offices, following Monday night’s attack on them.
Petrol bombs were hurled at the Mandaveli post office and at a business post centre at the Mylapore post office by an unidentified group. The department has now planned to step up security at all post offices in the city. “We have asked our security personnel to be alert after the incident,” said an official.
Sources said that the department has written to the police commissioner and the director general of police to provide security to these two post offices.
At the business post centre, a franking machine used to print the required value of postage on letters was damaged. At the Mandaveli post office, a portion of the wall was damaged.
“We are assessing the damage. Measures are being taken to revive operations at the business post centre. The centre will function at a temporary shed on the premises until the repairs are completed. A spare machine is being used at present,” said an official.
The business post centre at the Mylapore post office is one of the busiest offices in the city, fetching a monthly revenue of nearly Rs. 75 lakh. About 160 employees work at the centre.
