A drunk youth and his friends set on fire the motorcycle of a Traffic Sub Inspector at Tiruvottiyur on Wednesday night after being booked for riding under the influence of alcohol. Police have arrested five persons in this connection.

The incident took place near the tollgate in Tiruvottiyur when Traffic Sub Inspector Ilayaraja intercepted D. Prabhakaran (26) of North Praharam Street in Tiruvottiyur.

When he tested positive for drunk driving, the policeman asked him to pay a fine and seized his vehicle.

An enraged Prabhakaran left the spot after an argument only to return with his friends Mohan, Prakash, Satish and Baseeth.

While Mohan posed as a reporter, Prakash claimed to be an advocate and the group tried to intimidate Venugopal, another Sub Inspector who was at the scene.

The group demanded the return of Prabhakaran’s motorcycle.

When the official refused, they set his personal motorcycle on fire after dousing it with petrol.

Mr. Venugopal put out the flames and lodged a complaint with the New Washermanpet police later.
