A policeman, who was on bandobast duty for the swearing-in ceremony, lost Rs. 30,000 after an unknown person stole his ATM card and withdrew the money.

Police said Dhanapal (55), a special sub-inspector (SSI) attached to Madhavaram police station, came to Ezhilagam opposite the University of Madras on Sunday evening and parked his bike.

He changed into his uniform and kept his shirt in the box attached to the motorcycle.

The ATM card was in the shirt. He then headed off to work at the University campus.

At 11.57 p.m. on Sunday, he got a few messages in his mobile phone that read that Rs. 30,000 had been withdrawn using the debit card.

He rushed to the motorcycle where he found that the box had been broken and the card missing.

A case has been filed with the Anna Square police.
