Busy making plans for a trip during Deepavali? Make sure you also spend some time to put in place safety measures to protect valuables at home. Informing the nearest police station of your departure and the duration of the trip is a must-do, say officials.

Burglars mainly target locked houses. Police say robbers strike a few days ahead of Deepavali and then, escape to their hometowns.

Though patrolling has been increased, policemen advise residents to be cautious. “Do not keep valuables at home. If the trip is likely to be long, residents can get their relatives to stay over,” say officers.

Police also suggested care while hiring workers to get houses painted ahead of the festival. Recently, a house in Kolathur was burgled by a daily wage labourer.

He loosened the screws of the windows under the pretext of painting them. When the owners left, he entered through the window and stole the valuables. “It is safer for people to hire workers known to them,” the officer adds.
