Competitions to test the skill and ability of commando units of the State police and paramilitary forces in the country began at the Tamil Nadu Police Academy, Oonamancheri near Tambaram on Wednesday.
The national-level competition provides an opportunity for personnel of the State police and paramilitary commando forces to hone their skills.
Inaugurating the fourth All India Police Commando Competition, director general of police (DGP), Tamil Nadu, K. Ramanujam said while terrorists or hijackers take a lot of time to plan their operation, commandos had very little time to counter such acts.
And so, meticulous planning, the collection of field-level intelligence and execution of the plan within a few hours becomes the most important part in a counter attack.
Welcoming the gathering, additional DGP (operations), Sanjay Arora said competitions to judge reflex shooting skills, obstacle clearing contests and planning and execution of countering terrorist activities would be conducted.
A total of 23 commando units from 16 States and seven paramilitary units are participating in the six-day meet.
