A section of the portico leading to the main building of the Tamilnadu Government Music College, Adyar, collapsed on Monday morning.

Agora Murthy, an eyewitness, said that the incident happened around 8 a.m. “Not many people were around and no one was injured. The portion had developed cracks some days ago. The Public Works Department had been informed but repair work was yet to be undertaken,” he said.

A senior official of PWD, buildings wing, said that since the building was very old and constructed using lime mortar, it could not withstand the battering from the rain. Rectification work has since started.

The college was established in 1949. It offers courses in folk art, bharathanatyam, vocal, and instrumental music and nearly 350 students study.

The official said that just before the rainy season, a circular had been sent to all districts to carry out periodic inspection of old government buildings and file regular status reports.
