Parents protest fee hike at school

January 25, 2014 06:16 am | Updated May 13, 2016 12:18 pm IST - CHENNAI:

A group of parents from CSI Bain School in Kilpauk protested on Friday seeking a partial rollback in the recent hike in school fees.

T.T. Joseph, a parent, said about four months ago, the Private Schools Fee Determination Committee which determines the fee for private schools in Tamil Nadu, re-fixed the school’s fee after the school appealed in court.

“There is a hike in the range of Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 11,500 depending on the class. This is a very steep hike fixed by the committee,” he said. He added that this difference has to be paid for the current academic year, and additionally the fee will increase by 10 per cent in the next academic year, as it will for all schools.

Another parent noted that he would have to pay the difference for his two children who are in classes II and IX.

Mr. Joseph said that a hike of Rs. 2,000-3,000 would have been affordable. He said the parents had submitted a petition to the fee determination committee as well as the school education department in this regard.
