Police on Tuesday arrested three persons in connection with the murder of Sriperumpudur panchayat union ward member, P.P.G. Kumaran. Mr. Kumaran, of Pillaipakkam, was hacked to death on Monday morning.

Police said Praveen Kumar of Jaihindpuram, Madurai, was first arrested, and on interrogation, he reportedly confessed that he was part of a 10-member gang who attacked the ward member and his two friends.

Further investigations led to the arrest of Sriperumpudur panchayat union chairman, Venkatesan and Senthil Rajan, also of Sriperumpudur on Tuesday evening.

P.P.G. Kumaran was murdered when he was on his way to his office by car. When his vehicle was on Sriperumpudur-Kundrathur Road, a speeding vehicle from the opposite direction, hit the car in front of his. Seconds after the collision, an armed gang jumped out, and threw country bombs on Kumaran’s vehicle. Kumaran attempted to reverse but lost control of the vehicle and fell into a roadside ditch. The gang dragged him out of his vehicle, attacked him and fled the scene.

Kumaran died later at a private hospital. Two of Kumaran’s friends, Madhizhagan and Sankar, who were with him, also sustained injuries .

Meanwhile, three persons — Kalaimani of Kundrathur, Samson of Perambur and Gaush Basha of Vyasarpadi — surrendered at a judicial magistrate court in Chennai, stating that police were on the lookout for them in connection with a murder case. All were remanded to judicial custody, police added.
