The total amount of cash seized by officials during regular and random vehicular checks across the State has crossed Rs. 20 crore on Tuesday.

According to an official release, officials of the Static Surveillance Teams and Flying Squads have seized cash to the tune of Rs. 20.24 crore as on April 5. The teams constituted by the Election Commission have been conducting these checks since the Model Code of Conduct came into force on March 4, soon after the election schedule for the May 16 Assembly polls was announced.

However, Chief Electoral Officer Rajesh Lakhoni maintained that cash seized by officials were being returned, after valid documents were produced to prove that the cash was not being taken for illegal activities.

Since March 4, about 2.8 lakh complaints have been received relating to damage to public and private properties.

A total of 1,127 First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered.
