The general council of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) on Thursday urged the electorate to vote out the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance in Assembly elections.
Briefing reporters on the resolution passed by the council, MDMK general secretary Vaiko said that the main question before people was whether to allow the “family of Karunanidhi (Chief Minister and DMK president) to continue the plunder of the State or protect the welfare of the people.”
Faulting the “minority” DMK government on several fronts, he alleged deterioration in law and order, failure to protect the rights of the State on inter-State issues such as the Mullaperiyar dam and Cauvery, Pambar and Palar rivers, poor power situation and unprecedented price rise.
‘Himalayan scam'
Terming the 2G spectrum issue a “Himalayan scam,” he said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had admitted, during his interaction with editors of TV channels on Wednesday, that the DMK had insisted on the telecom portfolio for A. Raja despite allegations of irregularities in his previous tenure. “The Central Bureau of Investigation should book the real beneficiaries in the scam and the needle of suspicion points to a family,” he said.
He alleged that the Centre and State government had failed in their duty to protect the lives of fishermen. To a question on his party's seats-sharing arrangement with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, all that he would say was that the first round of talks with the alliance partner's election committee had been completed. “It is the prerogative of the AIADMK to admit any party into the alliance and we will accept the decision of our alliance leader.”
