One-day emergency leave for prisoners

September 26, 2013 09:02 am | Updated June 02, 2016 03:10 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Prisoners who had exhausted the maximum period of emergency leave will now get a one day emergency leave to attend the funeral of their close relatives.

Amendment

This becomes possible with the State government bringing an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Suspension of Sentence Rules, 1982.

According to a government order issued by the Home (Prison-V) Department on September 24, the Superintendent of Prisons or the Inspector General of Prisons may grant one day emergency leave to a prisoner who had already exhausted the maximum eligible period of emergency leave.

To attend funeral

The one day leave will be to attend the funeral of the prisoner’s spouse, father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister, on each occasion.
