A 35-year old motorist was killed after a 108 ambulance hit the two-wheeler he was riding at Aminjikarai on Sunday morning.

The pillion rider sustained grievous injuries and is undergoing treatment at Government General Hospital. According to police, the victim Saravanan was a resident of Muthumariamman Koil Nagar in Arumbakkam. He is married and was working as a load man in Koyambedu Market. His friend Raja is also a resident of the same street.

On Sunday morning, Saravanan and Raja were headed on the bike towards the market . While manoeuvring a bend, they collided head-on with a ‘108’ ambulance which was coming from the opposite side.

Saravanan sustained head injuries. A screwdriver which Raja was carrying pierced his stomach and he sustained injuries.

The duo was rushed to the Government General Hospital for treatment. Saravanan succumbed to his injuries at the hospital while Raja is still under observation.

According to Anna Nagar Traffic Investigation inspector Munusamy, the duo had gone to repair Raja’s load vehicle. “This is the reason they were carrying the tool box and screwdriver. After the repair work, they were on their way to Koyambedu market when the accident happened,” said Mr. Munusamy.

The ambulance driver Raja Badar was arrested and remanded.

“The vehicle was from Kancheepuram and had come to the city to drop a patient at an Egmore hospital. It was on its way back when the accident happened,” said Mr.Munusamy.

According to police none of those involved were under the influence of alcohol.

“The vehicle was from Kancheepuram Taluk hospital. Our ambulance was also fully damaged. On our part, we have surrendered the ambulance at Anna Nagar police station.

The driver has been released on bail now,” said an official from ‘108’ ambulance service.
