It turns out that the black, viscous liquid that seeped out on Anna Salai, on Sunday was cooking oil and it was coming from the sewers, according to a Chennai Metro Rail investigation says.

Sources in Chennai Metro Rail confirmed that a laboratory analysis made it clear that it was not any oil that was used by them. They suspect that the oil which leaked could have been used for cooking. There are a line of eateries close to the spot on that stretch of Anna Salai where the oil was found.

“It is Chennai Metrowater that has to lift samples to test and confirm our suspicion. We understand they plan to send notices to commercial establishments for dumping cooking waste in sewer lines,” an official said.

But Chennai Metrowater officials said they haven't sent any notices to any commercial establishments as yet with regard sewer block in the area.

On Sunday, a small amount of oil surfaced near Mount Road Dargah and it was suspected to be caused due to Chennai Metro Rail's tunnelling work. But it is to be noted tunnelling work in the area was completed about a year and half ago.
