Now, buy greens at a single click

March 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - CHENNAI:

You may now choose to shop for anything from the comfort of your home.

Of late, more residents of Chennai are turning their attention towards online stores that offer groceries, vegetables and even small household items.

Until three years ago, only small entrepreneurs had been involved in taking online orders for groceries.

However, the situation is changing with growing patronage and several leading players joining the fray.

Residents, particularly those in the suburbs, find it convenient to order online. Arun Narayanan, a resident of Vandalur, said he started ordering groceries online as it is hassle-free. “I don’t find many shops that offer quality products. Besides, doorstep delivery is convenient as I return from work late,” he said.

It is not just saving money and fuel alone that attract consumers, but also a number of discounts and the variety of products at the click of a mouse. According to V.G. Subramaniam, director, Easypurchase.in, the number of monthly orders has more than doubled in the past three years.

“We now get about 10,000 orders per month. We have tie-ups with retail supply chains across the city and we can deliver to any locality. People prefer to buy branded items online,” he added.

Fresh vegetables and fruits, particularly organically-grown ones that are delivered within a couple of hours, are among the most commonly-purchased items.

Kirupa Ganapathy, a resident of Pallavaram, said: “I started ordering organic food over phone two years ago and have now switched to online organic food shopping. I can finish shopping in minutes and have it delivered even daily without any service charges. I chose an online portal that provides fresh vegetables.”

With an eye on the growing online market for organic products, T. Jaiganesh, an IT engineer and weekend farmer, recently launched online sales for his small shop.

“I practise organic farming in Vellore. I also train farmers through Pasumai Organic Farmers Association and market their products. As of now, we cater to consumers in south Chennai without service charges. We offer at wholesale prices as our aim is to spread the benefits of organic farming,” said Mr. Jaiganesh.
