The Government Multi Super-Specialty Hospital at Omandurar government estate has received nod from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) to construct a building for radiation oncology and is awaiting clearance to set up the State’s first nuclear medicine department in the government sector.
According to hospital officials, the radiation oncology building will come up behind Rajaji Hall on Omandurar estate. “We obtained AERB approval recently. The government has sanctioned around Rs. 5.3 crore for the building. We plan to procure a high-end linear accelerator that will be installed in this building,” an official said.
Officials said the department will have nuclear imaging facilities such as positron emission tomography (PET) scan and single photon emission tomography (SPET) scan.
Three months ago, the hospital began functioning with 30 to 40 outpatients a day. Currently, it receives about 300 outpatients a day, and has about 200 inpatients, on an average.
Health minister C. Vijaya Baskar, speaking at a national workshop on ‘Advanced management of thyroid disorder’ on Thursday, said the hospital has treated a total of 20,501 outpatients and 1,810 inpatients over the past three months.
