The civic body has decided to ban political and religious meetings in its auditoriums. Publicity and sales events will also not be allowed.

Following a resolution during the Corporation Council meeting, on fixing rent for the modern auditorium at Shenoy Nagar, the Council has imposed restrictions for use of the modern auditorium.

“Usually, religious and political meetings are not permitted in Corporation halls. But in the absence of clear instructions, such events were being permitted at some halls. This Council meeting has given necessary clarity,” said an official.

Three years after deciding to waive rent for all its halls, the Corporation Council’s resolution on Friday marked a change in the decision to offer free services.

The Council has decided to collect a daily rent of Rs. 2.5 lakh for the Shenoy Nagar auditorium. Rent of Rs. 1.75 lakh will be collected for 12 hours and Rs. 30,000 for four hours of use. The airconditioned hall, located on Eight Cross Street, Shenoy Nagar, has a built-up area of 63,956 sq. ft. with seating capacity of 896 persons on the ground floor.

It has a parking space of 19,890 sq. ft. and a dining hall, also spread over 19,890 sq. ft. Consumption of liquor and gambling on the premises of the auditorium have been banned.

Residents who use the Corporation’s community halls for social gatherings will continue to pay rent. “Utensils are offered free of cost,” said an official.

The existing rates for other halls vary between Rs. 350 and Rs. 15,000 per day, depending on facilities offered.

Most of the key community halls and auditoriums of the civic body are located in areas such as CIT Nagar, Velachery, Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, Royapettah, Guindy and Kotturpuram.
