There is no bar on students celebrating ‘Bus Day’ provided there is no hindrance to travelling public and road traffic, Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said.
Talking to mediapersons here on Thursday, he said celebrating Bus Day could be confined to the campus as is being done in some colleges. Students would not be permitted to travel atop buses.
In a new arrangement, the traffic police were told not to conduct vehicle checks during rush hours. “Instructions have been given to ensure that vehicle checks are done only after obtaining permission from the DCP concerned. We are contemplating introduction of e-challan system,” he said.
Mr. Rajendran said a Traffic Inspector was placed under suspension in connection with a road accident in which a youth riding a motorcycle died recently. (A policeman allegedly walked to the middle of the road near Kolathur to intercept a lorry three days ago. While trying to evade police intervention, the lorry driver swerved to his right knocking down a motorcyclist who suffered grievous injuries and died). An enquiry has been ordered , he said.
Earlier, Mr. Rajendran took part in an Advance Security Liaison meeting held in connection with the visit of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to Chennai.
