Popular Carnatic vocalist Nithyasree’s husband V. Mahadevan committed suicide by jumping into the Adyar river from the Kotturpuram bridge in Chennai on Thursday afternoon. Firemen fished out his body after a 30-minute operation. Around 12.20 p.m., Mahadevan (45) drove his Honda City with driver Suresh in the passenger seat. While heading towards Kotturpuram, he suddenly stopped the car on the bridge, ran out and jumped into the river, despite Suresh trying to stop him, police sources said.The driver alerted Mahadevan’s family members and Ms. Nithyashree soon reached the spot with a relative on a two-wheeler and saw her husband’s body floating in the river, the sources said.
The body was taken to a private hospital and later sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital for a post-mortem examination. It was handed over to the family in the evening.
Soon, rumours were afloat about Ms. Nithyasree’s health. Her family members, however, said she was fine but in immense grief.

It was very shocking when have seen the news flash in Sun TV and Kalaignar TV yesterday afternoon. Yesterday evening and night I and my family were discussing only about this. I am son of late Ramadoss Iyer
of Anandathandavapuram, who was the founder and organizer
Gopalakrishna Bharathi music festival. Some 20 years back she gave a
concert at our village,which we still remember. She came from a great
lineage. Grand daughter of DK pattamal and Palghat Mani iyer. She led
a very pious life of singing songs of great people like Thiagaraja and
others. They are full of bhavat gunas and bhavan namas. I am not able
to compromise with the God Almighty's test for her. It is difficult to
console. But God has to give her all the power to her to come over
grief and extend her service to the music world. Despite she has to
console her children and parents. Nithyashree God is there. Be Bold
and face the world with courage. Please please for heaven sake do not
loose you confidence.

children. It requires much courage and strength to face challenges that life brings. To
run away from challenges is cowardice.
Suicidal thoughts are linked to Depression. There is no awareness in India for depression. There are plenty of meds & counselling services available to get through.

It was only on Sun., 9th Dec 2012, at the Sivagami Petachi Hall that I
had the opportunity to hear her sing, and as it happened, I almost ran
into her while rushing to the office of the Hall to enquire where I
should be queueing for her concert. What I will never forget about
that evening are:
- her 2 songs, one asking whether there is greater god than Sabapathy

Also, during the concert, she constantly turned back to respond to her
daughter behind her, and she was very loving and caring to her.
In this tragic event, one is reminded that being so exceptionally
gifted as Nityashree is does not come free, and sadly, while this was
too big a sacrifice to pay, she must carry on, just so she can comfort
spirits of so many "good" people seeking their spirituality through
her.

I am saddened to hear this tragedy for this great vocalist Nityashree.
I met her about 6 months back when she came for a concert in Iyyappa temple in Toronto.
She appeared a very modest woman although having reached great heights in her professional career.My condolences to Nityashree and her family and pray God that he gives her strength to over come this tragedy.Mr.Mahadevan should not have taken this extreme step as any differences can always be sorted out. May his sould rest in peace.Our support is always for this young kids at this moment of grief.

It is saddening to note the husband's suicide. It is not true that she
consumed poison, which was media distortion, since they were all stopped
away from the gate and denied any access. At this time of crisis, please
lend support to the artiste and her grieving family, rather than trash
reported by media.
Nityashree has such a divine voice and a personality to match. Her reminisces with illustrious musicians through her grandmother were oft quoted very humbly on stage. I am pained at the extreme step taken by her husband which has left the entire family distraught and unhappy. I only wish and pray God gives them the courage to forge on and may her daughters be torch bearers of the future. Request her not to withdraw from the music circle, instead find solace and peace among her innumerous rasikas!

This is truly a sad day! Ms. Nithyashree is a wonderful singer with a great heritage.
Without casting judgement on Mr. Mahadevan, it is tragic to read that somebody
took their life at such a young age. Since we were not wearing his shoes, so to speak,
it would be unfitting to pass any judgement on him. All we can do is pray for the
solace of the family which includes two young girls also, and may Almighty grant
them the strength to ford these troubled waters!
I request all the well wishers and rasikas to stand by this Versatile
singer through this moment of grief and not to dig deep into the muck of
their personal relationships or the cause of Mr.Mahadevan's
irresponsible act of committing suicide, leaving behind his young

Day before only i went to her kutchery and was with her till 10.45 PM. it is a shocking news to me. i really fell heavy hearted. What a tragic end to her husband. How can we all see her "kalayana mugam"

Very sad news indeed; with wife growing in popularity, we heard of some issues between couple - most common in all marriages sure; and spirit of accommodation and adjustment needed for all in life in todays world of emancipated women; pity IF this was missing and led to the disaster; and Nithyasree drinking poison reported in TV most distressing; a very good singer admired by millions to entertain us; PRAY GOD society learns lessons and tries to be more balanced in life, most essential for ALL.
I was there while this incident happened, though I did not see him jumping I was away few meters and traffic got jammed.
