February 27, 2010 02:41 am | Updated 02:41 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Chennai Corporation will soon commence conservancy operations in night in commercial areas. The Corporation Council, which met on Friday, adopted a resolution. Conservancy staff would begin work at 9 p.m. and finish it by 2 a.m. The areas to be covered include Tiruvottiyur High Road, Rajaji Salai, NSC Bose Road, Anna Salai, Kodambakkam High Road, South Usman Road, South West Boag Road, Pulla Avenue, Kilpauk Garden Road and Jones Road in Saidapet.

At the Council meeting, Mayor M.Subramanian said that complaints have been received against private conservancy agency Neel Metal Fanalca, which is in-charge of waste disposal and management in four zones of the Corporation. The civic body would not hesitate to take over the conservancy work from the agency, to start with in one ward. “It would take us a few months to get the requisite staff, compactors, tricyles and bins. After that our staff would be deployed for conservancy operations in one of the four zones,” he said.

An NMF official told The Hindu that the company was revamping its operations and would take steps to further improve garbage clearance. “Our vehicles had been under repair and now they have set right with the funds released by the Corporation,” he said.
