The National Green Tribunal, Southern Bench, on Thursday directed the Chennai Corporation to file an action-taken report on the steps taken against unlicensed slaughter houses in the city.

The Bench gave the direction while hearing an application filed by G. Arun Prasanna, trustee, People for Cattle in India, seeking a ban on illegal slaughter houses in the city and its outskirts.

When the matter came up for hearing on Thursday, the chief veterinary officer of the Corporation said 421 of the 1,616 meat shops were unlicensed and had been issued notices on March 8. Posting the matter for further hearing on May 28, the NGT asked the respondents, including the Chennai Corporation, to file reports.
