New schemes make no difference: Vijayakant

May 26, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:02 am IST - CHENNAI:

Criticising the five new schemes that Chief Minister Jayalalithaa cleared on Sunday, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijayakant said the people of Tamil Nadu wondered who the government was going to deceive this time.

The Jayalalithaa government, he said in a statement issued on Monday, had introduced “hundreds of schemes” from the time it came to power in 2011.

However, the schemes only raised the expectations of the people and were never implemented in full, Mr. Vijayakant said.

The announcement of schemes came after Ms. Jayalalithaa returned as Chief Minister following “a verdict that disappointed those who awaited justice”, he said.

Price rise

Mr. Vijayakant said the price of half a kg of dal now was approximately the price of a kg when Ms. Jayalalithaa assumed charge in 2011. “This only shows this government’s inability to arrest inflation,” he said. Mr. Vijayakant alleged that the government penalised whistleblowers in various government departments, “who exposed corruption”. Accusing Ms. Jayalalithaa of “day dreaming”, he said she would not be “able to cheat the people again”.
