Just when the music season and other cultural fests in the city are coming to a close, Mylapore is all set to don a festive look from January 21.
The seventh edition of Mylapore Festival, organised by Sundaram Finance, will span across 10 venues and feature 40 events involving 200 artists.
The four-day festival would have heritage walks, cyclerickshaw tour, food street, art street, crafts bazaar, crafts workshop for children, pallankuzhi and quiz contest. The festival seeks to celebrate the heritage and cultural richness of Mylapore.
Kolam contests, a flagship event of the festival, will have over 250 participants, with a few registering from places such as Bangalore and Kancheepuram.
New additions of this year would be origami workshop for over 60 children at Nageswara Rao park and dayakattam contest at Lady Sivaswamy Ayyar Girls’ Higher Secondary School. For children below 12 years, a chess contest will also be held.
“We have introduced a few more events for children, as they need to be exposed to the heritage richness of the place. This is entirely a group event and we are only acting as catalysts,” said T. T. Srinivasaraghavan, Managing Director, Sundaram Finance, addressing media persons here on Monday.
As a step towards environment awareness among Mylapore residents, Sundaram Finance, with support from Chennai Social Service, will distribute eco-friendly cloth bags to 10,000 people in exchange for plastic bags. Students from four colleges will present an art form based on ‘Save the Environment – Go Green’ theme. Ten food stalls, predominantly with local flavour, will be spread across the streets of Mylapore.
A photo exhibition featuring 40 heritage pictures, capturing the life and architecture of Mylapore, will be organised at Lady Sivaswamy Ayyar Girls Higher Secondary School. Marking the music season, an audio-video stage show of M.K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar will be screened.
A two-hour concert of songs from Tamil film classics, presented by C.A.Rajah, will bring down the curtain of the festival.
