Residents of Mylapore and Mandaveli complain that they have been forced to take a detour due to the delay in pipeline-laying work on some of the key roads.

With a part of P.S. Sivasamy Salai closed for traffic for months now, people have to take a detour via Bheemasena Garden Street to reach Royapettah High Road.

K. Vasudevan, a resident of Brindavan Street, said some motorists who were impatient to travel till Radhakrishnan Salai to take a turn to Royapettah High Road travelled on the wrong side of the road. This often led to accidents. Bus commuters were the worse affected as they now had to walk an additional kilometre to board buses near the Music Academy owing to traffic regulation. Earlier, they could board buses near the Thiruvalluvar statue on Royapettah High Road.

Residents of Thiruvengadam Street, Mandaveli, also complained that a portion of the road was dug up without prior notice and traffic had been made one-way. Earlier, Devanathan Street was unusable for several months. People now have to take a detour of nearly three kilometres through Devanathan Street, St. Mary’s Road and R.K. Mutt Road to reach Nandanam.

Mala Anand, a resident, said, “It is good to improve infrastructure. But, it must be done without hindrance. As mud is heaped up on a portion of the road, it is difficult even for pedestrians.”

‘Re-laying soon’

Sources in the Chennai Metrowater said that work to lay a new sewer pipeline for over 120 metres on P.S. Sivasamy Salai, which caved in during the monsoon last year, would be completed by July 31 and handed over to Chennai Corporation for re-laying of road.

Work has been taken up to lay a 1,000-mm diameter sewer pipeline between Mylapore and Adyar sewage pumping stations with additional capacity. While Devanathan Street will be re-laid soon, work on Thiruvengadam Street will take a month to be completed.
