A Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus fatally knocked down Yeshwant, 21, an engineering student, and rammed a Tasmac bar on CTH Road near Tirumullaivoyal on Monday afternoon.

According to the police, there were 15 passengers in the bus, which was proceeding from Broadway to Avadi.

It knocked down Yeshwant and his friend Jagan, 21, who were walking on the left side of the road.

“The driver, Mohan, 29, seems to have lost control of the bus as it swerved to the left and rammed a bar. As the bar was yet to open, nobody was injured as the accident happened before noon,” a police officer said.

Jagan, who sustained minor injuries, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Driver arrested

“Mohan claimed that he tried to avoid hitting a car that suddenly stopped in the front. As the brakes were not working, he swerved to the left and knocked down the pedestrians and then rammed the bar,” an officer attached to the Poonamalee Traffic Investigation said.

The police have arrested the driver Mohan.
