Two successful kidney transplants were performed on a 9-year-old and an 11-year-old at Kauvery Hospital recently, a press release said.
The 9-year-old boy had congenitally mal-developed kidneys with high blood pressure. He required multiple blood pressure medications and the condition was difficult to control. In the case of the 11-year-old, there was a condition leading to recurrent urinary infections, further leading to kidney failure.
In both cases, the mother was identified as the donor, and following an evaluation, transplant approval was obtained. The surgeries were then performed and both children are doing well after the transplantation, doctors said.
It is estimated that one in 65,000 children develop end stage renal disease needing dialysis and transplantation. The disease can affect children from the newborn period to adolescence.
Doctors also said that in children, transplants should be done early as the children could have growth retardation and bone changes, according to the release.
