The Chennai Corporation has planned to increase the number of designated parking lots to at least 150 locations in the city. After obtaining the approval of the new Corporation Council post elections, parking would be regulated on the stretches.
Even as the 56 new locations identified in addition to the 82 on-street parking spaces are being readied for accommodating four-wheelers, the number of parking spaces on the new list complied from the zones in the past few months has touched 150.
The Bus Route Roads Department of the Chennai Corporation had issued guidelines to the civic body's Revenue Department on identification of the locations two months ago.
The roads identified include those with commercial activity, width and scope for four wheeler parking. The roads would also have carriageway for two-way traffic even after the parking space is earmarked. The spaces below flyovers have also been identified for parking. Some of the locations on the list are roads where haphazard parking is being done. The move could regulate the parking spaces.
The newly identified stretches include seven roads in Nungambakkam, additional stretches along the Marina Beach from Kannagi Statue to Light House, Police Commissioner Office Road, parts of Pantheon Road, Link Road and Seniamman Koil Street.
The Bus Route Roads Department would also complete installation of more parking meters on some of the earlier designated stretches such as Third Avenue Anna Nagar, Santhi Colony near Sundaram Medical Foundation, Purasawalkam High Road, General Patters Road and Sardar Patel Road for which work order was issued before the notification of the election.
