About 60 students of DD Medical College, Tiruvallur, and their parents have spent the last five days on the campus of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
The students are demanding the university take measures to obtain Medical Council of India’s (MCI) approval and take over the college.
The students and some of their parents have been staging a sit-in protest on the university’s campus since August 21.
MCI had derecognised the college and had not permitted intake of students. But the college had admitted nearly 100 students for 2011-2012.
The students claimed they were unaware the college had been derecognised. “The university issued us hall tickets and conducted examinations in August 2012. We also downloaded the results from the university’s website in November. We want the university to recommend to MCI and take over our college,” one of the students said.
The students including 30 girls and their parents have refused the leave the university campus until the administration provides an explanation for conducting the examination for the de-recognised batch of students and a supplementary exam for one student in February 2013.
Apart from Rs. 8 lakh each for two years towards annual fees, many of the students have paid capitation fees ranging from Rs. 20 to 25 lakh, a parent said.
“We are here for the last five days despite the rains, mosquito bites at night and other difficulties. All we need is a solution to enable the students continue their medical education. The police have asked us to leave the premises but we refused,” she said.
