A 49-year-old man was allegedly killed by a gang of four men at Periamet on Friday night. He was identified as Augustine Velliaya from Palayam Chettikulam near Palayamkottai.

According to sources, he had come with his wife and daughter to attend a wedding. They were staying in a lodge. At around 9 p.m. on Friday, Augustine came out to buy dinner when he was attacked by the four men on Naval Hospital Road. His wife and daughter, who witnessed the attack, rushed to the spot and were also attacked. While Augustine died on the spot, his wife and daughter escaped with minor injuries. Long-standing enmity between the victim and a rival group in his home town is said to be the reason behind the attack. The Periamet police are investigating.

Joint Commissioner of Police S.N. Seshasai said special teams had gone to Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kancheepuram and Bangalore in search of the accused persons.
