A 41-year-old man, who cheated a man from Rasipuram of Rs. 25 lakh, was arrested on Sunday.

According to police, three years ago, Jalapathy of Rasipuram wanted to admit his daughter at a medical college. Since she had scored low marks in her class XII examinations, he approached his friend for help.

His friend introduced Jalapathy to Giri, a man residing in Aynavaram who claimed to have contacts with top officials at private medical colleges in the State. “Giri promised to get Jalapathy’s daughter admitted at one of the colleges, but demanded money,” said a police officer.

Jalapathy paid Giri Rs. 25 lakh. “But when there was no sign of his daughter getting admitted to college, Jalapathy tried to contact Giri and ask for his money back. Giri kept evading him,” said the officer.

Jalapathy then filed a complaint with the city police commissioner.

Giri, who is suspected to have cheated several others by promising them seats in medical colleges, was remanded to custody.
