A 48-year-old former stunt actor fell into a 30-feet-deep pit dug up as part of a subway work near Chromepet railway station on Monday evening. He remained in the pit throughout the night and was pulled out by Firemen on Tuesday morning. He had a miraculous escape but sustained bruises and scratches.
Narasimhan is a resident of Balamurugan Street, Bharathipuram in Chromepet. Late on Monday evening, he was sleeping on the top of a retaining wall close to the railway tracks. A subway is being constructed to replace a level-crossing at Radha Nagar near Chromepet station. According to Firemen from Tambaram station, Narasimhan was under the influence of liquor and had fallen into the pit.
He sustained injuries on his face, hands, neck, head and legs. He had fallen down into the pit around 11 p.m. Narasimhan called out for help, but no one heard him.
Around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, residents of Radha Nagar and passers-by heard his cries for help and and tried to pull him out , but in vain. On receiving information, Firemen from an Emergency Rescue Team in Tambaram reached the spot. They placed a ladder and a team entered the pit. They gave Narasimhan drinking water, tied a rope around his waist and helped him climb out of the pit through the ladder. He was taken in an ambulance to Tambaram Taluk Government Hospital in Chromepet. Hospital authorities said Narasimhan was sent home after treatment. Though the Southern Railway has completed its share of work, the State Highways Department is yet to finish its portion. It was in February 2000 that a proposal was made to replace the level-crossing with a subway. Work started in 2007 and has come to a standstill owing to several factors, including protests from people in parting with land for the project.
