A machine operator was crushed to death after he was sucked into heavy machinery at a factory in Oddappai village in Tiruvallur.

According to the Pennalurpet police, the accident took place around 9 p.m. on Friday when Logu Thiruvenkadam (24), a native of the same village, was operating the machinery at the factory producing mats for passenger cars.

“Logu found some threads stuck in the machine which was running at full speed. He tried to remove them but his hand got pulled in. His co-workers ran in but his entire body got pulled in and he died on the spot,” said an investigating officer attached to the Pennalurpet station.

The news of Logu’s death spread in his village and, within minutes, a group from the village ransacked the factory. A police team reached the spot and pacified the group, promising necessary action against the factory authorities and suitable compensation for Logu’s family members.

The body was sent for post-mortem to the Government General Hospital in Tiruvallur and later handed over to his relatives on Saturday, the police added.
