A septuagenarian allegedly committed suicide by slitting his throat with a knife on Thursday morning at an old age home near Porur, where he was residing.

The police said he took the extreme step as he had felt lonely and depressed.

The Maduravoyal police identified the deceased as T. Srinivasan (74), a retired employee of the State revenue department, who used to reside in Srinivasan Nagar, Madipakkam. The elderly man, a bachelor, joined the old age home in Chettiyar Agaram, three years ago.

On Thursday morning, Srinivasan was served coffee by his attender in his room at the home. The attender returned shortly after with breakfast and found the senior citizen lying in a pool of blood on his bed, with his throat slit. It is suspected that he committed suicide by slitting his throat with a knife which was found gripped in his hand. There was no suicide note, the police added.

The Maduravoyal police team reached the spot and carried out a preliminary probe. Srinivasan’s body was sent to Government Kilpauk Hospital for post-mortem.

The Sneha suicide prevention helpline can be contacted on 044-24640050.
