Man battles for life after attack

A 33-year-old man is battling for life at Government Stanley Hospital after he was brutally assaulted by a four-member gang in Ajith Nagar, Tondiarpet, on Thursday.

Around 9.30 p.m., R. Gopal (33), a construction labourer, was dining at a small hotel in the neighbourhood, around one kilometre from his house in Shivaji Nagar in Tondiarpet, when a gang attacked him with sickles and iron rods and fled the scene.

Gopal sustained serious injuries on his head, hands and legs and was rushed to hospital by employees of the hotel and onlookers. The police arrested three for the attack while the rest are absconding.

The police said Gopal’s wife’s family was behind the attack. Gopal married Hemalatha (28), a divorcee, five years ago despite stiff resistance from her family which considered Gopal inferior to their status.

“Gopal gave life to a divorcee. Instead of respecting him, the in-laws took revenge on him because of his social status,” said a police officer.
