A 25-year-old man attempted suicide at Vadapalani Chennai Metro Rail station by jumping onto the tracks, police sources said.

Around 7.15 p.m., Sudhaman was standing on the platform. As soon as he saw a train that was heading towards Koyambedu approach the platform, he jumped onto the tracks before the security guard could stop him.

Fortunately, the driver saw him jump and stopped the train in the nick of time, sources added.

Sudhaman was hit as the train was moving at a speed of about 25 kmph. Despite the driver applying the brakes, the train slowed and stopped 100 metres away, sources said. “He was thrown between two tracks. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is undergoing treatment,” an official said.

Sudhaman had suffered multiple fractures, hospital authorities said.

Services disrupted

Train services were stopped for 15 minutes due to the incident, sources said.

According to the police, Sudhaman had attended a job interview in the morning. Further investigation is on.

Delhi Metro Rail has witnessed several incidents of people attempting suicide at Metro stations. But this is the first such incident since Chennai Metro Rail began operations between Koyambedu and Alandur last year.
