Maanja thread injures 33-year-old

April 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - CHENNAI:

It’s that time of the year again when kite flying becomes rampant in the city.

Due to this, the number of persons getting injured with maanja thread coated with glass powder also shoots up.

The latest casualty is a 33-year-old man from Tiruvottiyur.

According to the police, Kalaiselvan of Kasimedu was riding his bike on Ennore Expressway on Thursday, when a glass-coated maanja thread wound up around his throat and slit his neck.

He was rushed to a private hospital and is now recuperating. “We will soon nab those who were flying the kite,” said a police officer attached to the Tiruvottiyur police station.

According to the police, at least 10 such cases are reported every year. Last month, a four-year-old boy suffered cuts on his face after his neck got entangled in a dangling maanja thread in Teynampet.

Earlier this month, the Madras High Court had directed authorities to place before it the government’s decision on the use of maanja , the precautions taken, and the details of awareness campaigns undertaken. Senior police officers said they are working out ways to tackle the problem.
