The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) are coming out with star-rating for energy-efficient LPG stoves, over the next couple of months.
As of now, airconditioners, refrigerators and other electrical equipment that consume less energy are given star ratings. “The thermal efficiency of LPG stoves is 68 per cent. In the next two months, stoves with higher efficiency will get ratings. Those with 85 per cent efficiency will get five stars,” said A. Janakiraman, additional director, PCRA.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a one-day programme on ‘energy-efficient drives, driven and the controls – an integrated approach to energy savings’ jointly organised by the Society of Energy Engineers and Managers (Seem) and PCRA in the city on Saturday.
Earlier, in his inaugural address, Mr. Janakiraman said India is dependant on fossil fuels and has only 0.5 per cent of oil and gas resources of the world. “The crude oil resource will only last the next 20 years, hence we have to use it wisely,” he said. P. Dharmalingam, director of National Productivity Council, made a PowerPoint presentation on the need to save energy.
S. Mahadevan, chairman of Seem, said the efficient use of energy requires major attention as we are still one of the countries with high levels of energy consumption per unit production of GDP, when compared to global averages.
Technical sessions on energy-efficient motors, pumps, fans and blowers, and a panel discussion were held during the programme.
